Thoughts on Holy Week

It’s Holy Week. How are you preparing for this Easter Sunday?

I pray it’s more joyous and brighter than ever!

You may be thinking, “How can this Easter be joyous and bright, with all that’s going on?” Well, consider this particular Easter is a better representation of the first Easter. The first Easter didn’t feel like “Easter” either. Think about it:

  • The first Easter was laced with trials, sadness, confusion, and uncertainty. Jesus had been brutally executed, buried, and now they lived with a mystery: Where’d His body go?

  • The first Easter didn’t have large gatherings of people. No earthly choirs. No egg hunts, bunnies or ham.

  • The first Easter was realized in the heart and in the head. What’s just happened here? How significant is this? What has changed? For the world? For me?

  • The first Easter, like this Easter, changed everything from where God stood, and God waited—oh, how God patiently waits for us to get it.

The only thing that really mattered on the first Easter was that Jesus was alive! He had been dead, but then He wasn’t!

My dear friend, that is true, true, true for us today. He’s very much alive!

And since He died and was raised, we, too, will be raised. We will live. I want that! It’s the only thing that matters for me, for us, this Easter.

So, pull out all the stops. Don’t give any ground to the enemy who wants to diminish the celebration of the resurrection of Christ by breaking our schema and stripping us of the trappings of commercialism—even good things, like large gatherings. Don’t let the sucker do that to you!

Here are a few ideas to celebrate this Easter:

1. When you get to the grocery store, snag some flowers—they represent new life, my friend.

2. If your income hasn’t been adjusted during this time, but someone else’s has, bless them in some way. (Food? Flowers? Gift Card?)

3. FaceTime anyone you know who is alone—widows, singles, etc.

4. Pull out every musical instrument you have and make some music! Pull out pots and pans and spoons. Make some noise. (Oh, the kids will LOVE this.)

5. Post it online. Post a video of Easter music! (Your family or of someone else.)

Let the music focus on the Living Christ!

Together, let’s raise the roof!
