The Only Thing You Can Count On God For

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”

(which means, “God with us”). Matthew 1:23.

I have a hard truth to tell you.

But Nancy, it’s Christmas, could you just keep things merry and bright and feed us something that will give us that cozy Christmas feel?

I could. But after the year I’ve had, and the place I’m in, and the things I’ve seen and heard and now know better, why on earth would I do that to you?

So here goes: There is only one thing you can count on God for. One thing alone.

If we courageously consider the main point, the focus, the intention and wild idea of Christmas, I think you’ll agree; as much as I confess, I often wish it were otherwise, “God with us” is what we’re promised.

That may feel like a downer. A consolation for God giving us all the goodies from our spiritual Santa List. So, you protest: No, Nancy, God promises us way more than that! God promises us a name, a home, a way, light, truth, life, peace, and I could go on.

And in part, you’re right. But know this:

God is Life.

God is Truth.

God is Light.

God is the Way.

God is our Home.

God’s conferred on us The Name.

God is our Prince of Peace.

When you long for these things, you are longing for God.

Don’t miss the incarnation! Immanuel: “God With Us.”

The very point and purpose of Christmas. God promises us no more and - oh, don’t miss this - no less, than God’s very self in every situation now and forevermore. That is no consolation prize. It IS the prize.

The Christ of Christmas showed up. God’s present to us. God’s presence with us.

In it all.

I’m real because God is so real.  ~Nancy
